Vitalik Buterin is a Russian/Canadian writer and programmer. Vitalik has been involved in Bitcoin since 2011, as a writer for Bitcoin magazine. He is most well known as the main founder behind Ethereum, a blockchain platform that operates as a world computer for decentralized applications, or Dapps.

Vitalik was born in Moscow, Russia where he lived until the age of six when his parents immigrated to Canada to search for better jobs. By third grade, Vitalik was placed in a program for the gifted. He was naturally gifted to math and programming, and could add three-digit numbers in his head twice as fast as the average person of his age. Buterin spent four years at a private high school in Toronto where he made learning the primary goal of his life.

While searching for a new life purpose, Vitalik came across Bitcoin in 2011. He didn’t have the resources to mine or purchase Bitcoin so, he wrote Bitcoin articles for 5 Bitcoin a pop. His articles became pretty well known and attracted Mihai Alisie, the cofounder of Bitcoin Magazine. Soon thereafter he dropped out of colleg to travel and write for crypto.

After looking at other protocols, Vitalik realized that he could build a Turing-complete blockchain platform.

Bitcoin Magazine:

Vitalik came across Bitcoin in 2011 and soon looked for work in Bitcoin on various forums and eventually began writing articles for a blog, earning him around five Bitcoin per article.

At the same time, he looked into all the different economic, technological and political aspects of cryptocurrency. His articles attracted Mihai Alisie, a Romanian-based Bitcoin enthusiast, leading to the co-founding Bitcoin Magazine in late 2011. He was writing, traveling and working on crypto for over 30 hours a day and hence, he decided to quit university.

In 2013, Vitalik Buterin described his idea for Ethreum in a white paper, which he sent to a few of his friends. By 2014, the team had realized they could easily build  decentralized file storage and name registry into their protocol.

Ethereum was publicly announced in January 2014, and also presented the idea on at  the Bitcoin Miami conference. A few months later, he held an ICO of Ether, to fund the development. Vitalik also received the Thiel Fellowship grant of $100,000.

The team raised around $18 million from the sale which they used to form a non-profit organization based in Switzerland and continue development. Ethereuem’s overall development principles were universality, modularity, simplicity, agility, non-discrimination and non-censorship.

Ether Holdings: Vitalik owns 335,000 Ether and in w2021, when Ether hit $4,000, Vitalik’s paper net worth topped $1.3 billion.

Shiba Coin: In 2021, the creators of a coin called $SHIB announced they gifted Vitalik half of all the SHIB in existence or 505 billion $SHIB which soon became worth $14 billion. He later gifted these coins to international causes such as Covid.
